About Robert LaPrade, MD

Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD has specialized skills and expertise in diagnosing and treating complicated knee injuries. He has treated athletes at all levels, including Olympic, professional and intercollegiate athletes, and has returned numerous athletes back to full participation after surgeries. Recognized globally for his outstanding and efficient surgical skills and dedication to sports medicine, he has received many research awards, including the OREF Clinic Research Award considered by many a Nobel Prize in orthopedics. Dr. LaPrade is one of the most published investigators in his field, and many of the surgeries that he has developed are now performed worldwide and recognized as the “gold standard” for the treatment of complex knee injuries.

Not All Research Created Equal

When it comes to research, not all published studies are created equal. In an article in the Vail Daily, Dr. LaPrade explains that while reworking experiments is part of the scientific process, problems in a study’s design can lead to a disconnect between the way a study is interpreted by the scientific community and how […]

Clinical Outcomes of High Tibial Osteotomy for Knee Instability

OJSM 2016

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in high tibial osteotomy (HTO) to treat patients with chronic knee instability due to posterolateral corner (PLC), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) insufficiencies with concurrent malalignment in the coronal and/or sagittal plane.

The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic […]

A Physeal‐Sparing Fibular Collateral Ligament and Proximal Tibiofibular Joint Reconstruction in a Skeletally Immature Athlete

2016 KSSTA

The purpose of this report was to describe the surgical technique for and outcomes after a modified physeal-sparing posterolateral corner reconstruction in a 12-year-old skeletally immature male with a mid-substance fibular collateral ligament tear, a proximal posterior tibiofibular ligament tear, and an anterior cruciate ligament avulsion fracture of the medial tibial eminence. A […]

High-Load Preconditioning of Soft Tissue Grafts: An In Vitro Biomechanical Bovine Tendon Model

2016 KSSTA

No consensus exists regarding the optimal preconditioning protocol that will minimize postoperative elongation while creating a graft that is biomechanically equivalent to the native anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It was hypothesized that a preconditioning protocol of specific mode and magnitude would create a graft with equivalent stiffness to the native ACL.

In this experimental […]

Nayla Tawa’s Recovery From a Life Changing Knee Injury

During a filming trip to Kyrgyzstan, Nayla Tawa experienced a life changing accident that ultimately lead her to complex knee specialist Dr. LaPrade. Nayla’s accident resulted in a PCL tear, superficial MCL tear and deep MCL tear. She was told she would likely never snowboard again. After a double-bundle PCL reconstruction, superficial MCL reconstruction, deep MCL […]

An In Vitro Robotic Assessment of the Anterolateral Ligament, Part 2

2016 AJSM

Recent biomechanical studies have demonstrated that an extra-articular lateral knee structure, most recently referred to as the anterolateral ligament (ALL), contributes to overall rotational stability of the knee. However, the effect of anatomic ALL reconstruction (ALLR) in the setting of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) has not been biomechanically investigated or validated.

The […]

Meniscal Trephination

Meniscal trephination Overview

When a meniscus is torn, the options for treatment can include either repair or resection.  In most circumstances, we strive to repair the meniscus because it is an important shock absorber for the same compartment of the knee.  The loss of the meniscus invariably leads to the development of osteoarthritis over time.

In some circumstances, there […]
