About Robert LaPrade, MD

Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD has specialized skills and expertise in diagnosing and treating complicated knee injuries. He has treated athletes at all levels, including Olympic, professional and intercollegiate athletes, and has returned numerous athletes back to full participation after surgeries. Recognized globally for his outstanding and efficient surgical skills and dedication to sports medicine, he has received many research awards, including the OREF Clinic Research Award considered by many a Nobel Prize in orthopedics. Dr. LaPrade is one of the most published investigators in his field, and many of the surgeries that he has developed are now performed worldwide and recognized as the “gold standard” for the treatment of complex knee injuries.

Osteoarticular Allograft Transplantation of the Trochlear Groove for Trochlear Dysplasia

2018 JBJS

Chronic patellar instability after a primary dislocation event is common, and reasons for recurrent dislocations are multifactorial . Risk factors include trochlear dysplasia, insufficiencies in the medial stabilizing retinacular structures, increased tibial tubercle-to-trochlear groove (TT- TG) distance, and patella. Trochlear dysplasia reportedly is present in 85% of […]

Changes in the Neurovascular Anatomy of the Shoulder After an Open Latarjet Procedure

The Latarjet procedure, which was first described in 1954, has emerged as a common surgical option for recurrent anterior shoulder instability with positive clinical outcomes. Typically, the Latarjet procedure is  indicated when anterior glenoid bone loss reaches 20% to 25% because this has been reported to be the critical […]

Pain Behind the Knee with Extension

What Causes Pain Behind the Knee with Extension?

Pain behind the knee with extension is not that common. Most posterior knee pain is present with deep knee flexion or kneeling. Therefore, it is important to understand the region of the pain to help delineate what the source of the pain may be coming from.

Back of the […]

ACL Reconstruction Graft Choices

What Graft is Best for ACL Reconstruction?

There are many different graft choices for ACL reconstructions, and it is important to recognize the differences among all of them.  First, there is a difference between using one’s own tissues, an autograft, and using a cadaver’s tissues, called an allograft.  It is well recognized in the peer reviewed literature that […]

Causes of Pain Under the Kneecap

What are the Causes of Pain Under the Kneecap?

There are many cause of pain under the kneecap and on the front part of the knee. In the past, these pain generators were generically-called either “patellofemoral chondromalacia” or “anterior knee pain.” In general, sports medicine specialists today prefer to have a diagnosis based on specific pathology. […]

Quantitative radiographic assessment of the anatomic attachment sites of the anterior and posterior complexes of the proximal tibiofibular joint

2018 KSSTA

Purpose Quantitative guidelines for radiographic identification of the anterior and posterior ligaments of the proximal tibiofibular joint have not been well defined. The purpose of this study was to provide reproducible, quantitative descriptions of radiographic landmarks identifying the anterior and posterior […]

Low incidence of posterolateral corner injuries at the NFL Combine

Investigators found few players at the 2018 National Football League Combine had evidence of a posterolateral corner injury, with only 0.4% had residual varus symmetry on the clinical evaluation.

“[Defining] the extent and grade of posterolateral knee injuries in athletes at the NFL Combine is difficult when only subjective evaluations are assessed,” Robert F. LaPrade, MD, PhD, told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “In […]

Rebound® PCL Case Study

Indication

The patient was a 24 year old male injured during a tumbling landing. He sustained a severe varus noncontact injury.

Diagnostics

An MRI scan demonstrated a complete tear of his posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), a grade III complete posterolateral corner injury, a minimally displaced anterior tibial plateau fracture, and a medial meniscus root tear. PCL stress radiographs […]

Anterolateral Knee Extra-articular Stabilizers

Background: Persistent clinical instability after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction may be associated with injury to the anterolateral structures and has led to renewed interest in anterolateral extra-articular procedures. The influence of these procedures on knee kinematics is controversial.

Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose was to investigate the biomechanical properties of anatomic […]
