Dr. Robert F. LaPrade has been selected as the recipient of the Jack C. Hughston Sports Physician award for 2021.
The Jack C. Hughston Sports Physician Award is the academy’s highest individual honor for a physician. The award was instituted to grow the bonds and demonstrate the importance of collaboration between sports physicians and sports physical therapists. Successful candidates exhibit a willingness to partner with sports physical therapists by jointly publishing and lecturing, showing public support, and promoting the practice of sports physical therapy.
The Hughston Award is given annually for the most outstanding paper appearing in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM) prior to the award. Jack C. Hughston, the founder of AJSM, is one of the pioneers in sports medicine. Early on he recognized the need for immediate diagnosis and surgical correction of ligamentous injuries about the knee in order to achieve optimum results. He performed numerous cadaver and clinical studies to develop the concept of anatomical repair of injured structures in the knee and developed a classification system based upon his clinical observations and studies.
Dr. LaPrade is very humbled to have been provided this award. He states: “This award means a lot to me because I was one of the last to train under Dr. Hughston (who was considered the “Father of Sports Medicine”). In addition, the previous award winners are recognized as many of the leaders in sports medicine.”
Congratulations to Dr. LaPrade!
